Congratulations to our National Team

USKA JR. AND ADULT NATIONAL TEAM TRAVELS TO PKC

The United States Karate Alliance Junior and Adult National Team competed at the Professional Karate Commission’s International Karate Championships over Labor Day weekend. Several other Alliance members also competed. Once again, our National Team Members and Alliance members showed great sportsmanship and great technique. Our Junior National Team won the team fighting. Unfortunately, our Adult Black Belt Team was not able to repeat its win from last year in the team fighting because two of our members, Scott Shook and Josh Quayhagen, were unable to attend due to previous commitments. The results are as follows:

National Black Belt Team –

Dr. Rebecca Effler – Black Belt Women – Black Belt Women’s Sparring Grand Champion, 1 ^stplace sparring, 2 ^nd place kata, 2 ^nd place weapons.

Sandra Jovanovic – Black Belt Women – 1 ^st place weapons, 1 ^st place kata. Ms. Jovanovic is a regular competitor at PKC and was also inducted into the PKC Elite.

Kristin Dupaquier – Black Belt Woman – 1 ^st place sparring, 2 ^nd place weapons, 3 ^rd place kata

Matthew Bourque – Black Belt Men – 3 ^rd place sparring, 4 ^th place weapons

Junior National Team –

The Alliance will be sponsoring the National Team to attend the United States Karate-Do Kai Karate and Kobudo Internationals in Palm Springs on November 3, 2018.

The National Adult Black Belt Team is comprised of the Black Belt National Point Champions, or winners of two Black Belt Grand Champions at Nationals and/or Worlds, and the National and World Men’s Black Belt Kumite Grand Champions. The following are on the 2018/2019 National Adult Black Belt Team: 1) Josh Quayhagen; 2) Scott Shook; 3) Matthew Bourque; 4) Dr. Rebecca Effler; 5) Sandra Jovanovic and 6) Kirstin Dupaquier.

The National Youth Team consists of double or triple crown winners of National Point Divisions or double Grand Championship winners at Nationals and/or Worlds, who are 12 and over and a brown or black belt. The following are on the 2018/2019 National Youth Team: 1) Ethan Padilla; 2) Sebastian Witt; 3) Jacob Jones; 4) Jacob Boutwell; 5) Taylor Rudolph; and 6) Nicholas Waguespack.

Do you want to be a national team member? Chase points and you too can join this prestigious group. All Black Belt Adult point champions are team members, plus the Black Belt Men’s and Women’s World and Kumite Grand Champion, who are USKA members. The youth team is comprised of competitors with two national point championships or one national point championship and a World or National Grand Champion, or two World or National Grand Championships. The new team members are announced each year at the World Championships.

2018 United States Karate-Do Kai Karate and Kobudo Internationals

The 2018 United States Karate-Do Kai Karate and Kobudo Internationals featuring the Trias Cup Competition will be held November 3, 2018, in Palm Springs, California. The tournament features the prestigious Trias Cup Competition, which consists of the top two winners in each adult Black Belt kata division performing three different kata in three separate rings before a different panel of judges. The competitor with the top score wins the Trias Cup. The USKK and Hanshi Phillip Koeppel have been throwing this tournament since 1984. This year’s tournament is co-hosted by Hanshi Phillip Koeppel and Guy Holtzman.

Hanshi Koeppel will be the featured seminar instructor on Friday, November 2. The seminar will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Palm Springs Karate Academy, 4781 E. Palm Canyon Dr. in Palm Springs. Don’t miss this chance to study with a true American karate pioneer.

The tournament will feature divisions for competitors of all ranks and ages. Winners of 1 ^st through 4 ^thplace in each division will receive beautiful medallions and double Alliance points towards the United States Karate Alliance Point Championships. The tournament will be held at the Raymond Cree Middle School, 1011 E. Vista Chino in Palm Springs.

The USKK Bushido Society meeting will be held at the Fairfield Inn & Suites on Friday, November 2, 2018, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Jewelry in the Competition Ring

Jewelry is worn for religious purposes, for decoration and for individuality. It’s all good, but there are times it’s not appropriate. Uniforms are not gender specific, they are often an equalizer in that we all look very much the same. This allows us to stand out with our skills instead of our style.

Jewelry should be kept to a minimum as it is not part of the uniform and can potentially be dangerous. Hoops and post earrings can cause injury to yourself and rings and necklaces can hurt yourself or others. You will probably not get marked down, but in the sparring ring you may be asked to take it off for the safety of your competitor. You wouldn’t want to lose your favorite items. If your jewelry is religious in nature and cannot be removed, please explain this to your judges if you are asked to remove them. If the jewelry is deemed dangerous you may have to remove it or not compete.
